More about Acorns

Acorns is adjacent to Quercus, where John Bayes and family have lived since 1984. The flat is totally self-contained with separate entrance parking nearby. Bed linen and towels are included.

The gardens were commenced in earnest in 1994. Prior to that they had mostly been at the mercy of ponies and show jumping enthusiast, Tellina Bayes, who eventually departed for University. (Like they do!)

We planted a small Pinetum, and long border of rhododendron, hydrangea, camellia, and other acid loving shrubs, To the west we have a potager planted with cordon apples, and centrally a large formal rose bed and a soft fruit garden. The most striking features of the main garden are the five large oak trees, over 100 years old, for which the house is named. This area of about 20 acres was part of an Ancient Woodland and is all that is left of Willow Wood, a thriving pocket of wildlife on the highest point in Whitstable. 200ft above sea level.

We are still entertained with the sounds of tawny owl, foxes and hedgehogs and, of course, plenty of birdsong.  It can be hard to believe we are so close to Whitstable, a short drive or 20 minutes' walk away. The nearest pub and restaurant, The Long Reach, is within easy walking distance.

Cyclists and walkers welcome.
